Frosty day in the snow-covered Pieniny Mountains
Perfect day for a day trip to the Pieniny Mountains
A January day in the Pieniny Mountains welcomed us with frost that nipped at our cheeks and snow crunching under our boots with every step. Our trip began in Szczawnica, where we took the chairlift up to Szafranówka, and then continued on foot toward the shelter on Durbaszka. The winter silence felt almost magical — only our breath and the steady rhythm of walking kept us company.
Amazing views
Along the way, and later from the top of Wysoki Wierch, we were rewarded with vast, crystal-clear views and a stunning panorama of the Tatra Mountains, which in the frosty air seemed close enough to touch. At the Durbaszka shelter, a bowl of hot żurek tasted especially good after the cold hike. In total, we covered 20 kilometers. We returned the same way while lingering to admire a beautiful sunset. The sky filled with warm shades of pink and gold, contrasting perfectly with the icy landscape. It was one of those moments that stay with you for a long time — simple, cold, and absolutely beautiful.
Beauty of the Pieniny Mountains
The Pieniny Mountains may be small, but they are exceptionally interesting and picturesque. Their unique landscapes, limestone cliffs, and wide views make them a great destination in both summer and winter. The region offers many opportunities to explore nature, from scenic hiking trails to river valleys, as well as to discover local culture and traditions. Thanks to their proximity, the Pieniny are also a great choice for a one-day trip from Kraków, for example for the famous Dunajec River rafting. It’s a perfect place for a short getaway that leaves lasting impressions.
