WOODEN TREASURES – UNESCO wooden churches

UNESCO wooden churches are, in my opinion, the most unique monuments on Polish UNESCO List.

What are the wooden treasures of The Lesser Poland? There are over 200 wooden churches all over the region. Some of them are dated back to the 15th century. Just think how much has happend in those 600 years: wars, fires, natural disasters! But those wooden treasures are still standing and telling us the story of past centuries.

This is simply a miracle and a wodreful gift that we can still admire them!

There are 14 UNESCO wooden churches in the Southern Poland. The inscription includes both catholic and orthodox churches. All of them are amazing and situated in picturesque small villages. Moreover, they delightfully integrate into the landscape making them a wonderful travel destination.

I chose for you five monuments which are the most valuable and accessible for tourists. Firstly, we will visit the oldest and the most precious little church in Lipnica Murowana, where you can still find the wall paintings from 16th century. Secondly, we will drive to Binarowa to admire the parish church os St. Michael the Archangel. Further three churches are located in the area of Gorlice, in tiny villages called: Kwiatoń, Owczary and Sękowa. Each of those UNESCO wooden churches has unique architecture and atmosphere.

It’s not only the wooden churches that make southern Poland intersting!

The tour wouldn’t be complete without visiting other interesting places on our way like the medieval town of Biecz or hostoric cemetry from WWI situated at the remote Małastowska Pass.

Depending on the weather conditions and the pace of sightseeing we can see some other churches on the way, have lunch in a restaurant or enjoy a picnic. This will be a full day trip and I will make it the most enjoyable.

In short, you will see five UNESCO wooden churches, admire villages and little towns, drive thorough countryside of southern Poland and learn about its history, tradition and culture.
